High in the mountains, Silver City is the beginning of an oasis of green in the desert.
5 Miles north of town is the 3,300,000 acre Gila National Forest.
The forest was first designated as the Gila Forest Reserve in 1899. It was renamed as a National Forest in 1905.
Today it is still one of the most undeveloped national forests in the country.
In the Gila National Forest are 60 foot Ponderosa pine trees, Elk, Deer, Bear, Wolves and other wild life.
Hiking Trails abound. You're allowed to camp anywhere you can get to, not just in the government maintained camp grounds.
