Bill Evans Lake
30 years ago Phelps Dodge created this supply water lake for the Tyrone Open Pit copper mine.
A number of years ago it became the state owned and maintained Bill Evans lake.
It is stocked by the NM Game and Fish Department.
There's no swimming allowed but primitive camping, fishing (even from an electric motor powered boat) and birdwatching are available.
The 62 acre, lake is approximately 33 miles Northwest of Silver City and is stocked with brown trout and bass.
The NM state record largemouth bass (15 Lbs. 13 Oz.) was caught here in 1995 by Steve Estrada.
The NM state record white bass (4 Lbs. 13 Oz.) was caught here in 1983 by Jack Alexander.
It is kept full by pumping water from the nearby Gila River which is actually 300 feet lower in elevation.
